Course Description

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the foundational principles of music theory. Through lectures, assignments, and practical exercises, students will develop essential skills in musical notation, rhythm and meter, scales, key signatures, intervals, and chords. By the end of the course, students will have a solid understanding of the building blocks of music theory, enabling them to analyze and interpret musical compositions with confidence.

Course Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

1. Read and write standard musical notation with accuracy
2. Analyze rhythmic patterns using simple, compound, and odd meters
3. Construct major and minor scales and identify key signatures
4. Identify and write melodic and harmonic intervals
5. Build and analyze triads, seventh chords, and diatonic chord progressions
6. Apply Roman numeral analysis to harmonic progressions in musical compositions
